Body Image Betrayal and Related Issues
Every day millions of men and women engage in combat with themselves. They fight a constant war between the image they see in the mirror and the image they believe they need to obtain. We name their struggles: Anorexia, Bulimia, and COE. We may whisper as an emaciated girl walks past us on the street, or we may laugh as a larger size man or woman struggles to fit into the bus seat in front of us on the afternoon commute. Gay Men and Body Image
Growing up gay in a straight world can increase young men's vulnerability to body image problems. The search by gay men for identity and acceptance has become overly focused on having a lean muscular body. The issues are complex. A lean muscular body may help a young gay male feel safer in a homophobic society, as it counters the negative feminine stereotype. Problems surface when excessive exercise and other extreme measures are used to achieve and maintain this look.
